About the Club

The NYU Sport Taekwondo Club (formerly, the NYU Jidokwan Club) was founded in 1988. It is a member of the Ivy Northeast Collegiate Taekwondo League (INCTL) along with several other colleges in the region. The primary purpose of the club is to provide a framework for fielding teams that compete within the INCTL. In addition to team competition, we also have athletes that compete individually in various local, regional, and national tournaments.

House Rules

Our club is devoted to making you, as a student of New York University and as a student of the martial arts, better in all ways. This takes cooperation, thoughtfulness, and good vibes.

The dojang (school) is wherever we practice or perform. There are some basic rules that we follow, many of which serve a practical purpose (like not stinking up the place with a biological uniform).

  • While you are in the dojang, Taekwondo is all there is. Worry about finals after class.
  • "Can't" is not a word we use in the dojang.
  • Respect both your seniors and your juniors.
  • Bow to the dojang when entering or leaving the room. Every time.
  • Be on time.
  • Always wear a clean dobok (uniform).
  • If you do not have a dobok, wear clean and flexible clothes.
  • Maintain your personal hygiene.
  • Trim all nails at all times.
  • Do not wear jewelery or watches - you'll hurt yourself and your classmates.
  • No food in the dojang.

    Taekwondo Tenets

There are many sets of tenets of Taekwondo. One of the most concise yet encompassing lists is:

  • Courtesy
  • Integrity
  • Perseverance
  • Self-Control
  • Indomitable Spirit

The path for most will not be definable by simple terms such as "easy" and "hard" because enjoyment and spirit will skew your perceptions thereof.
